AHS Athletics 2017: Early Predictions say Pigott!

We are one day away from the final showcase of athletic talent among the girls of The Anglican High School. Feb 9th 2017 will be remembered as the day when this year’s championship claims were finally decided but some early predictors are saying that Pigott House is clearly walking away with the 2017 title.

By far, the most hisotrically dominant house at the Anglican High School, they have already amassed 23 titles over the 52 years of competition establishing a near decade long reign at the top. In the last 5 years however, they have only captured the championship once. This begs the question, “why are Pigott supporters so confident?”

The answer lies in their position, ahead of tomorrow’s championship showdown. Sitting in 2nd position, albeit, tied with Bertrand House, the Pigott camp is only 32 points away from leaders, Walton House. This is one of the closest, pre-day totals in recent years, made possible by a strong showing at the 2016 Cross Country Run.

Notwithstanding their position, points amassed on Championship Day are what matters and therein lies the source of elation among the Pigott supporters. Their line up boasts some of the best and most experienced athletes at the Anglican High School. The likes of Shaquanda Felix, Christel Mapson, and 2016 Junior Champion Abigail Jeffery all but ensure that the Junior division and the all important relays belong to Pigott House.

Strong contention is expected from Bertrand House, with whom they are currently tied and Garraway House has its fair share of exceptional talent who will also shine. In fact, the Pigott Camp is counting on it! They have enough of a talent pool to keep their name in the mix in almost every event tomorrow and every win Walton doesn’t get, is a step closer to victory for Pigott. No doubt Bertrand House is thinking the same thing but only time will tell.

Tomorrow February 9th promises to be an exceptional showcase. It’s still anybody’s game and we at Ahspire absolutely cannot wait!

 

 

 

AHS Athletics 2017: Points Standing before Feb 9th showdown

It’s less than two weeks til the GTC FM Anglican High School Athletics Championships and it’s still anyone’s game. The results of a hotly contested Road Relay did nothing to change the overall positions heading into the championships on Feb 9th. Only time will tell whether Walton House has the stamina to may it to the end.

AHS Basketballers looking to recover from their first loss

The Anglican High School Basketball team suffered their first loss against the St. Joseph’s Convent at the Carenage Basketball Court on Jan 12th. Losing by a mere three points, AHS was restricted to their lowest total of the season in what turned out to be a hard fought match.

“We defeated ourselves. We didn’t have to lose that match but we let negative energy spread through the team and we ended up losing. ” Reba Mitchell – Senior Player

With a final score of 10 – 13 in favour of the SJC St. George, the Anglican High School moved to 2-1 in the 2017 Basketball Competition.

“I don’t think anyone can beat the team when they’re at their best. It’s not a boast so much as it is that I’m confident in their abilities. We lost that last match because they defeated themselves. That can’t happen next time.” – Mcsween

Their final match in this round of competition will be played against the girls of the Grenville Secondary School at the Carenage beginning at 3:00pm today Jan 25th.

Princess Britton helps Walton claim Junior Road Relay

Walton House remains the overall leader heading into the 52nd GTC FM Anglican High School Athletics Championships on the back of a dominant performance in the Junior Division of the Road Relay.

The Green Team, comprised of Trishanna Stephen, Princess Britton, Akeisha Henry and  Kimasha Lewis, led Walton to a victory just 2 minutes shy of the Junior record set last year.

Henry, Stephen and Britton had already claimed three of the top 5 positions  in the 2016 Cross Country run despite this being their first year at AHS. Combined with the experience of 3rd year vet, Kimasha Lewis, Walton were expected to excel in today’s event and that they did.

All roads now lead to the National Stadium on February 9th 2017 where this 52 year rivalry will be settled, for now.

 

Nikeisha Lewis leads Bertrand to Road Relay victory

Betrand House claimed top honours in the Senior Division of the 2017 AHS Road Relay held today Jan 19th 2017. The 4 woman team consisting of Nikeisha Lewis, Heidi Charles, Delissa Phillip and Samantha Joseph delivered a record breaking performance to secure 24points for the Red Team.

This is the second consecutive win for Bertrand House  in the Senior Division and a much needed victory as they started the day only 32 points behind overall leaders Walton House.

The Road Relay is the final event prior to the annual GTC FM AHS Athletics Championships. All roads now lead to the National Stadium on February 9th 2017 where this 52 year rivalry will be settled, for now.

Tensions are high at the Anglican High School with a potential 48points up for grabs in the Annual Road Relay scheduled for Jan 19th 2017.

The Road Relay marks the last event before the GTC FM sponsored Athletics Championships carded for the National Stadium on Feb 9th 2017.

AHS Athletics 2017: Katelann James wins Gold as Betrand House leaps forward!

The penultimate stop on the road to the 2017 AHS Road Relay took the AHS to the National Stadium for the Long Jump; High Jump and Triple Jump Events on Tuesday Jan 17th. The day was rife with competition but by as early as midday it was clear that Bertrand House would be the force to be reckoned with.

Sitting in third position, 49 points behind current leaders, Walton House, Bertrand needed a strong showing. The defending champions proved last year, by coming back from a near 100 point deficit, that when Bertrandites are backed into a corner, they shine and shine they did!

Mickesha Blackman set the pace early in the Preparatory Long Jump and High Jump competition capturing silver for Bertrand House falling a mere 0.2m short of Cassie Charles of Garraway House in the Long Jump.

Katelann James wins the SubJunior Long Jump

In the Sub Junior Division, Katelann James continued her domineering performance. After capturing gold in the Shot Put and Cricket ball events last week, James moved on to capture gold in the Sub Junior High and Long jump respectively.

Aaliyah Bartholomew ties for 3rd in the Long Jump

Following in similar fashion, Bertrand claimed gold in the Junior High Jump in the name of Aaliyah Bartholomew, who has made a name for herself in this event at the InterCol Games. Bartholomew continued to demonstrate her prowess, capturing gold in the Triple Jump and establishing the school record. Despite a solid effort in the Junior Long Jump, Bartholomew managed a third place tie, falling to Rickeisha Edwards and Sophia Mark of Garraway House.

Games captain of Bertrand House rounded out the day’s performance taking silver in the Senior High Jump, falling second to Pigott’s Reba Mitchell.

One final stop remains on the road to the 2017 Championships on Feb 9^th, “The Road Relay” an event which can yield a maximum 48points. With the scores relatively close, it’s still anyone’s game. All attention shifts to the Road Relay scheduled for Thursday 19th Jan, a contest that promises all the drama of competition.

AHS Basketballers go “two up” in 2017 Competition

Wednesday Jan 11th 2017, the Anglican High School basketball team continued their opening charge through the 2017 Interschool Basketball Competition.  The girls from tanteen faced off against the Wesley College, a team well known for its dominance in the Male Division. From the first toss up, Wesley College made it known that AHS was in for a fight and fight they did. After 40 grueling minutes, despite several bumps and a few spills  the AHS powered through to a 30 – 6 win over the Wesley College.

We won but it was a hard match! They were playing agressive. We were a little timid at first but Mr. McSween pumped us up and we got the job done! – Reba (Senior player)

Speaking to the team after the match, they credited their victory to teamwork and it was evident on the court as Kerissa Thomas contined her solid form. In a game where previous standout Nikita Bowen struggled, Thomas stepped up  leading the team into their second victory and claiming the Most Valuable Player award for the 2nd Match. Her efforts were matched with nigh impenetradle defensive work from the likes of Priness Abraham & Alisha Scott who continue to prove their value to the AHS team.

With two matches out of the way, the AHS Ballers look ahead to Monday’s showdown against the St. Joseph’s Convent St. George. This match up promises to be a heated contest as both teams have been producing strong performances thus far. Their match is scheduled for Monday Jan 16th at the Carenage Basketball Court.

AHS Athletics 2017: Garraway House out throws the Competition

It’s the end of the second week of 2017 and things continue to heat up on the road to The Anglican High School Athletics Championships 2017. Garraway House, despite a slow start to the season, have rallied with dominating performances in the Field Events.

Over the course of the past week, (Jan 9th – 13th) the respective coloured camps of the Anglican High School were entrenched in heated rivalry. Days removed from a rain soaked showing at “Track Heats 2017″each House was looking to make a statement in the Field Events. Bertrand House took and early lead in the Sub Junior shotput and Cricket ball events. Walton House did its best to remain in the competition as well but no performance came close to that of the Blue Battalion who blew away all comers in the Discuss event and remained one point shy of the winners in the cricketball and Javelin events as well.

Nikita Bowen Shines! AHS continues sporting dominance

The Anglican High School Basketball Team jumpstarted the 2017 Basketball season by handing out a crushing defeat to JW Fletcher Memorial Secondary on Monday January 9^th 2017. Supported by standout performances from Princess Abraham, Kerissa Thomas and Alischa Scott, first game MVP Nikita Bowen led Team AHS to a 37 – 03 victory over JWF. Bowen amassed a total of 19 points, accounting for more than half of the AHS total.

“We did well against JW but I think we could have done better. We could have scored more. I think we could do with some more fitness training but I’m ready for Wesley College on Wednesday.” Alischa Scott, senior player

The first round win comes as no surprise to Coach and Physical Education Teacher Edmund McSween who led to team to the finals of the annual competition on two separate occasions in recent years. “Our opponents were a pretty young team so I’m not surprised but there’s more work to be done. Our match against Wesley College should have similar results.” McSween.

The Anglican High School Basketball Team looks to follow in the footsteps of the Netball Teams who clinched both the Junior and Senior Division Championships last December. Their next match up is on Wednesday Jan 11^th against the Wesley College.
